3 Tips to Find Genuine Happiness

Last week, on International Day of Happiness, I got a call from BBC. They asked if I could join a mid-day program as a happiness expert and share my insights on what makes us genuinely happier.

When BBC calls, you answer the call! Even if you have to run home and change so you can be camera-ready in 2 hours.

(BTW, I’ve done TV a bunch of times before and that’s often how it works: You get a call just a few hours or the day before!)

My husband was awesome enough to record the segment from his computer screen.

You can watch a snippet of it here.

So what did I say about what makes us genuinely happy? It’s all about connection:

  • Feeling connected to ourselves
  • Feeling connected to others
  • Feeling connected to our purpose

Which brings me to how you can uncover more joy and aliveness:

Connect with yourself — go for a solo walk, do a little water-coloring or another craft, journal, just BE with yourself for a bit. Add a gratitude practice to remind yourself of the abundance in your life. And please, please, please DO SOMETHING THAT FILLS YOU WITH JOY… without justification or apologies.

Connect with people you love — cook a meal, take a walk, or play a game together (my husband, daughter and I are seriously into Uno!) Give your phones a break for a bit. Or maybe reach out to a friend you haven’t talked to in a bit and just chat.

Connect with your purpose — work on a project that feels meaningful, spend some time reflecting on your goals, do something that honors what’s important to you. Your purpose is within you and you connect to it when you tap into your unique gifts and share them with others. (I did a little video about this here.)

Have a beautiful day, you awesome human!
